Old Mill District: lofts, cottages and the river greenway

The neighborhood around Ashbury's old textile mill is one of the best values in town. Here's what to know about the homes, the river and the food hall.

Twenty years ago the old textile mill sat empty. Today it holds apartments, artist studios and The Mill Yard food hall, and the small streets around it are some of the most interesting in Ashbury.

The homes

The original mill cottages are small, one and a half stories, often with a porch and a big back yard. Many have been fully renovated. You’ll also find 1940s homes and a few rows of new townhomes near the river.

Why people like it

  • The River Greenway runs along the edge of the neighborhood: walk, run or bike to downtown in ten minutes.
  • The Mill Yard food hall and the taprooms on Foundry Street mean you can walk to dinner.
  • Prices are lower than Laurel Heights for a similar-size home, usually $300,000 to $520,000.

Things to know

A few streets closest to the river sit in a flood zone, which affects insurance. We always pull the flood map before you make an offer. Parking is mostly on the street on the older blocks.

Who it suits

First-time buyers, cyclists, dog owners and anyone who wants a home with some history without paying Laurel Heights prices.
