Overview

For two years, Ben was DataStax’s senior graphic designer, working as a freelance contractor for the company’s US and international marketing teams. The role started part-time and became full-time within a few months. At its peak it meant 150–200+ finished assets every month.

The challenge

DataStax, the company behind the enterprise distribution of Apache Cassandra, ran a heavy calendar of conferences, workshops and content launches. Each one needed its own set of pieces in the same brand: booth graphics and signage for the event, social and display banners to promote it, and the datasheets, case studies and white papers that sales handed out afterwards. The design had to keep pace with that calendar without the brand drifting from one piece to the next.

Our approach

Events. Ben owned all the creative for DataStax Accelerate 2019, the company’s Apache Cassandra conference, and designed tradeshow booths for Strata NY 2019 and a Microsoft event. For AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas he did all of DataStax’s campaign work, including bus ads, airport signage and taxi-lane signage.

Digital. Every event, webinar and new white paper got its own banner set: registration banners for Accelerate, “Join us at VMworld 2019” promos, hands-on workshop invitations and social graphics for downloadable content.

Collateral. Alongside the event work he designed customer case studies, datasheets and one-pagers, plus white papers and eBooks such as The Untold Story of Apache Cassandra. All of it was built on the same navy, teal and dot-pattern system, so a booth, a banner and a PDF felt like one brand.

The result

For two years, DataStax had a senior designer working with its US and international marketing teams across events, campaigns and sales content, producing 150–200+ assets a month at its peak. The same visual system ran through all of it, from booth backdrops to one-page PDFs.
